Susan Jones
Mixed Media Artist
I started painting in oils when I was 10 years old, growing up in metropolitan Detroit—where I was fortunate enough to visit and study at the world-renown Detroit Institute of Art (DIA).
Throughout my life, I painted on-and-off as I found time in my busy life as a working Mom. When I retired in 2012 as a mortgage banker, my love of art and style and the joy of studying fellow artists came back to me.
I’ve spent time over the last few years absorbing different techniques and talents from the many exhibits I have had the privilege to attend. One that impressed me was the Diego Rivera Frida Kahlo exhibit at the DIA this past March. However, my greatest inspiration is found in Vincent Van Gogh—for not only his talent, but the way in which his tormented life influenced his style.
My brush strokes vary. Often I paint with a palette knife. I want some strokes to be visible to the eye, and others to be soft and finely blended…almost invisible like whipped cream.
As a “snow bird” from Michigan, the scenery and sunshine here in Florida inspires me greatly, and I am overjoyed to have settled back into my craft. I have been honored to win two ribbons: Honorable Mention, Fine Arts Lake County; and the Mt. Dora Art Festival ribbon of Merit. Thank you MDAL 2016.
